Birds

Birds nesting in a dryer vent, the attic or the chimney? Here’s why it matters and how we fix it.

Birds find their way into buildings in every season. Some get trapped in a chimney, others get in through the attic, and a lot of people assume that’s no big deal. It’s a common misconception.

Why birds are a problem

Bird droppings are hazardous. Pigeons and starlings are known to carry salmonella, blastomycosis, histoplasmosis, encephalitis and other diseases that can infect people. The droppings are acidic too, and eat away at building materials.

Birds also nest in dryer ducts and above light fixtures, which can create a fire hazard.

The three most common culprits

A pigeon in flight

Pigeons

Roost on ledges, signs and rooftops and leave heavy droppings behind.

A house sparrow on a bird feeder

House sparrows

Nest in vents, gaps and light fixtures, often right by a door.

A European starling on a post

European starlings

Pack nesting material into vents and cavities, and come back every year.

All three are known for nesting in building cavities: bathroom fan vents, dryer vents, microwave vents, gaps in siding and fascia, roof vents and peak vents.

How we handle birds

If you have birds in your attic, a vent, or simply flying around the house, call us as soon as possible. We remove birds humanely, then repair, replace or re-screen the entry point so they can’t get back in. For businesses, see our bird control services.
